Proper saddle fit is a positive development
since poorly fitting western saddles cause problems
for both horse and rider. Let us say, there
is no such thing as the perfectly fitting
western saddle. A horse’s body will change
throughout its life and even throughout the
year as their exercise level and nutrition
varies. If you buy the “perfect” saddle to
exactly fit a horse now, in time it often
results in a poorly fitting saddle.
It’s not necessary to have the “perfect”
western saddle for a horse to have a comfortable
fit. Think of the cowboy. He rode many
different horses with the same western saddles. He
couldn’t afford a different saddle for every
horse he had to ride. He did, however, have
to have a quality well built saddle to fit
the physical type of horses he rode. That’s
a proper saddle fit.
Such a western saddle should comfortably
clear a horse’s withers, allow for free
movement of the shoulders, be the proper
length and shape for its back, and be well
balanced to provide good weight
distribution. That's how western saddles
properly fit. If you ride horses of
different breeds or significantly different
sizes, then you'll need to invest in
multiple saddles.
